Are Twiglets Vegan?

The answer is: Yes

We can breathe a sigh of relief because these deliciously crunchy snacks are suitable for vegans. This is because they contain ingredients that are not sourced from animals.

What are Twiglets Are Made Of?

Twiglets

Twiglets are made of the following ingredients:

  • Wholewheat Flour (80%),
  • Flavouring [Yeast Extract (Barley), Salt, Vegetable Extract (Carrot)],
  • Vegetable Oils (Sunflower, Palm),
  • Salt,
  • White Pepper

Why are Twiglets Vegan-Friendly?

Whole wheat flour is a powder made from the milling of wheat that is not durum. The mill is made up of two chilled-case corrugated iron plates that are stacked vertically. One plate remains stationary while the other rotates. Because of the shearing action as well as the friction, the wheat that enters the hopper is ground between the plates.

By varying the clearance between the plates, the particle size of the flour can be adjusted. Whole wheat flour is vegan and does not come into contact with animal byproducts.

The flavoring used in Twiglets is made with yeast extract, barley, salt, carrot extract, sunflower oil, and palm oil. Palm oil is quite controversial because although it is extracted from plants, it is a major contribution to deforestation and is not considered vegan-friendly by some vegans. However, it does not contain animal byproducts.

Final Thoughts

Twiglets are labeled as being vegan and with only five main ingredients, it is easy to see why. They do not contain any animal products and all their ingredients are sourced from vegetables and plants. Twiglets can be considered vegan-friendly by dietary vegans but for stricter vegans, the presence of palm oil in this product may be a cause for concern.
