Are Burt’s Bees Vegan-Friendly?
The answer is: No
No, Unfortunately, we can’t give the company’s products a vegan pass. Their products are made from animal sources including milk, lanolin, honey, royal jelly, and carmine
Why are Burts Bees not Vegan?
Many of the products under Burt’s Bees have animal products or by-products that are bad for vegans. Milk, lanolin, honey, royal jelly, and carmine are a few ingredients used in the products.
We’ll explain why these aren’t vegan-friendly.
Milk, of course, is taken from cows and other animals. Lanolin is the oil secreted from a sheep’s skin to protect its wool. This is what companies use to add vitamin D3 to their products. Although honey is made from plant secretions, bees use the enzymes and other chemicals in their body to create substances which makes it an animal by-product. Royal jelly is a separate secretion from bees that they feed their larvae with.
Lastly, Carmine is food coloring that is made using cochineal insects.
Not all Burt’s Bees products contain ingredients from animal sources. But they have stated on their website that they haven’t labeled any of them as vegan-friendly. This is because many of their products are produced on shared lines in the factory, which makes it likely for there to be cross-contamination.
Some of our products do contain animal-sourced ingredients, such as milk, lanolin, honey, royal jelly and carmine. These are all listed on the ingredients section on the packaging and on our website. Please note, many of our products are produced on shared lines, which is why we don’t call out “vegan” or “vegetarian” on our products. If you have a specific product question, please contact us and we would be happy to assist you.
